What is beauty? -Amaan

A topic that I am exploring in one of my films is the concept of beautyI’ve been thinking about the idea of beauty for a long time now. It is something that is held in such high regard in our society, but I never really knew why. I have mainly wondered what other people’s opinions and ideas of beauty are. I know personally that I’m not conventionally beautiful, for multiple reasons, but it’s something I don’t care or worry about. I really want to know what other people have to say about beauty. Do other people think they are beautiful according to societal beauty standards? Do people think it’s an important attribute? What do other people consider beautiful?  I’m especially interested in what members of the Westtown community have to say. This film/idea is still in developmental stages so I don’t know exactly how I’m going to do this. I will most likely interview people within the Westtown community because that is what is readily available to me and I’m genuinely curious what some people have to say. I don’t know what I want the end goal to be, I guess I’ll figure it out towards the end.

There is one conception of what is beautiful worldwide which is a shame. When I think of what those standards of beauty are I think about a light skin female with straight hair, blue eyes, and average height but also thin. I don’t see thicker women or dark skin with different types of hair. I find it unfortunate that there is this one face or body we associate with beauty and I do not find it to be the only true representation of beauty. I would love to share my thoughts in your film, let me know if/when you need me.

Would you be interested in exploring, in your movie, how societal standards have shaped or shifted people’s opinions about beauty? That might have something to do with the collision between individuality and conformity.

This is so interesting. I haven’t spent much time thinking about what beauty means to me, only what my “beauty”/looks mean to others, or how at least how they are being perceived by others. That being said, I think that beauty can be found in many forms — in someone’s voice, in someone’s personality, in their passions, in nature, in the classroom, in music, in dance, in athletics, etc. I do not believe beauty is purely an external human thing, although the first thought that came to mind when I saw the word was a model or celebrity. What a unique topic though, as beauty is so personal to everyone! I would love to learn more about your findings on this.
