Oil on Water (I’m punny) – Lauren

In the past week, I’ve been cracking down on work for my show on Sunday. Though I’ve felt rushed through this past week, I’ve come to the realization that watercolor is really the medium (as far as painting) I need to be working with. I know… I was gung-ho about oil, and I started a few paintings, but the nature of watercolor fits my way of doing art far better. My independent, afterall, is an opportunity to grow and explore, and this is a pretty profound realization I’ve had about myself as an artist.

I work in a very opaque way, which translates well into watercolor… not so much oil. Oil is a very solid medium by nature, so as an artist who tends toward translucency, it is less than ideal. When I work with oil, I end up adding a lot of white to compensate for the solidity of it, which dilutes the painting and its quality. However, I’ve worked hard to catch up with watercolor, and have many in progress. I’ve also done some drawing studies.
